She Built This City is a Charlotte-based nonprofit dedicated to empowering women, youth, and marginalized communities by providing pathways into the skilled trades, particularly in construction and manufacturing. Founded in 2019 by Demi Knight Clark, the organization aims to dismantle barriers and challenge stereotypes in traditionally male-dominated industries through innovative and inclusive programming.
The nonprofit offers a range of educational initiatives, including hands-on camps for elementary and middle school students, after-school clubs, and a comprehensive pre-apprenticeship program for adults. These programs focus on both foundational skills, such as carpentry and plumbing, and future-proof technologies like 3D printing and virtual reality. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, She Built This City adapted by launching a mobile tool lab and virtual shop classes, ensuring continued access to training.
In 2024, the organization received a $1 million grant from the Lowe’s Foundation to expand its reach across North Carolina, including new locations in Charlotte, Cabarrus, Greensboro, and High Point. This funding supports the growth of their programs and further strengthens their mission to diversify the trades.
